City Women’s Personal Safety & Self-Defense Tips

The concrete jungle we live in offers a heavenly hideout for big wolves always on the prowl, always ready to prey on unsuspecting victims – mainly women. These criminals have no qualms about robbing and raping. How can women protect themselves? The only way possible is to be alert at all times…..

Many of us may think that women of this 21st century would be much more independent and free to go anywhere they like as social prejudices have been lowered compared with decades ago.

Whilst sexual discrimination still exists in some countries, and the corporate women traveling alone may find it disconcerting to approach a male business associate, the truth is, women should always be extra careful when traveling. Women, generally are always become the prime target for criminals or bullies who see them as the ‘weaker sex’, physically less capable to defend themselves.

It is necessary to keep reminding women especially single lady and girls even myself to be alert and careful wherever they go especially big cities. To a large extent, a large city will always have its good and ugly sides.

It is alarming to note that women do seem to have our fair share of crimes even without stepping out of our homes sometimes. Plying the housing estates, are robbers waiting to pounce on their unsuspecting victims. Cruising along the highways are those specializing in all manner of highway robbery tricks. At times, under bright daylight, there could be a robber attack in a crowded public amenities right under everybody’s noses and the robber can still make a clean gateway!

Young girls, women especially single lady are being snatched off the streets in public places (I have a personal experience on this which I have written and shared in my earlier post), crated off, rapped and dumped by crazed individuals. It’s disheartening to acknowledge that women are still not sufficiently protected especially in most of the South-East-Asia countries.

Below are some women personal safety tips and some security precautionary measures for their ‘survival’ and self-defense in the cities:

(1) Always take note of the license plate number of the taxi you are in and check the taxi driver on his permit (which is displayed on his dashboard) to ensure it is the same person. Always wait or queue at a more reputable hotel or shopping complexes for a taxi. One should never travel in ‘private’ taxi or unlicensed or unauthorized operator who bangs out mainly at the airport to offer cheaper fares. This safety tips especially applies to whichever big city like Kuala Lumpur single women travelers are in.

(2) Whenever arriving in a strange city, it is always wiser to book a hotel pick-up as most of the airports are far away from the city. Moreover language and cultural differences can potentially pose a lot of problems.

Even if the flight is delayed, always call the hotel ahead to inform them so that they can re-arrange the transportation for you.

(3) There are plenty of incidents of women have been robbed on the highways, or tailed by a car all the way home and then robbed. Some are apprehended at traffic lights. One of the more common strategies the perpetrators employ is to knock into your car, thereby causing you to stop, get out and inspect your car. That’s when the trouble begins. It is safe to drive home when you know or suspect you know you are being followed? No, this is definitely not a wise move. It is better to drive to the nearby police station or the nearest public place and seek help.

(4) Never travel on a low petrol tank as that increase the risk of a robbery. Should try to go to usual petrol station to top up as opposed to stopping desperately at a strange station and getting out of the car. Women should try to get familiar with the staff in petrol station, even better to get recognizes by them. This is a very practical safety tips useful for single ladies and women in big cities.

(5) Living alone can be fun but women need to take extra prevention measures to protect themselves. This is also applicable when staying alone in a hotel as women can be followed to room. Even in a five-star hotel, incidences of rape and robbery can happen as there are professional robbers who dress up like well-to-do seasoned travelers but prey on woman guests who think they are safe. Women especially traveling alone should always check their room location to ensure it is not too far away and secluded or near the staircase where someone could be waiting to pounce on women victims.

Most of the women think they are able to identify the “safe” and “unsafe” places: as long as they avoid “unsafe” places, they should be secured and fine. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case.

Collectively, women especially single ladies should demand better protection from the police. Women should also ask for better protection in public places like shopping malls, hotels and service centers like petrol station and public transport.

While there are crimes in other states or sub-urban areas, the city seems to have the highest share of them, and this needs to be addressed.

In short, women have to be alert at all time regardless when and where they are. Women should always equipped with themselves precaution measures, knowledge and self-defense tools for their personal safety and protection.

Remember, knowledge is POWER. Safety must come first before SUCCESS. Women have to take control of their own safety. When it comes to safety issues, Nothing Can Be Compromised!
